Westmorland and Furness Councillor Bids Farewell to Local Government for Australian Career Opportunity

Another Westmorland and Furness Councillor will resign from the council on Friday this time the resignation comes ahead of the councillors relocation to Australia.

Cllr Niyall Phillips will be resigning from his posts on Westmorland and Furness Council tomorrow, Friday 10th April after serving on Westmorland and Furness Council since its formation as a Conservative Councillor for the Hawcoat and Newbarns ward.

Cllr Phillips, who works for BAE Systems in Barrow, will be transferring ‘down under’ to work for two years.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, he said: “It is exciting, I have not been to Australia before, to move to a new country next Wednesday will be good and challenging.”

Regarding leaving after four years as a councillor, he said: “It is a bit disappointing to be leaving, but when an opportunity comes up, sometimes you have got to look at things a bit differently.

“The opportunity to go to Australia for two years, with the same employer, is not something that comes about often.”

But he said that, in the long term, he would like to return as a councillor, and said it had been a ‘real privilege’ to represent residents.

Cllr Phillips said: “I have really enjoyed doing the things that I have done in council. It has got its frustrations, the pace and will of some things to happen.”

A by election to fill the vacant seat will only take place if Westmorland and Furness Council receive a petition to hold a by election signed by two electors in the Ward.

If a by election is held the person elected will only serve as a councillor until May 2027 when all seats on the council will be up for election.
