National Highways have closed the A66 in both directions between the A67 near Bowes and the A685 near Brough due to strong winds.
Road users travelling across the Pennines are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes such as the A69.
National Highways said "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
