Solar Storm Forecast to Give Another Strong Display of Northern Lights Tonight

Skies across the UK were illuminated on Friday night with the Northern Lights and forecasters are saying that, with activity remaining high, there's a hight chance to see them again tonight.

The Northern Lights are again expected to be visible over Penrith and across Cumbria tonight (Saturday 21st March), following the arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME) and elevated solar wind speeds after a sun spot fired material out into space towards earth earlier this week, according to forecasts issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the UK Met Office.

Geomagnetic activity has increase significantly over the last 24 hours, with the CME impacting Earths magnetic field on Friday evening leading to the norther lights been visible across most of the UK on Friday night.

Given current atmospheric conditions and low cloud cover forecast across the north of England, there is a good opportunity for spotting the auroral activity locally on Saturday night.

The optimal viewing time is expected from approximately 11pm on Saturday through until 1pm Sunday morning.
